Network Control and Message Delivery System
u/VOLTDS (UNIX-based, Virtual On-Line Transaction Distributor System) is
an integral part of the u/SWITCHWARE on-line system as it is responsible for
message delivery. u/VOLTDS is a network control and transaction distribution
software module that allows u/SWITCHWARE to communicate with any other node in
the network, whether it’s an ATM, POS device, switch or an authorizing
application.
u/VOLTDS handles all the overhead associated with coordinating communication
requirements between u/SWITCHWARE and other nodes. It does this using a library
of device drivers, with each driver associated with a supported communication
protocol. For example, if a message is received from an ATM using Polled NCR,
u/VOLTDS uses the appropriate driver to strip all communication-related
characters from the message before passing it on to u/SWITCHWARE. The same
driver is used to insert the proper protocol-related characters in the response
to the ATM.
u/VOLTDS also functions as a high-performance framework for
building business critical applications, and is particularly useful for
developing on-line transaction processing (OLTP) applications. With its multiple
network interfaces, the underlying network is masked from the application
programmer. The programmer uses a standard set of message to send and receive
functions that remains the same regardless of the communication protocol used in
the network. As an example, this enables programmers to deploy applications as
easily over TCP/IP as X.25
