Remote Key Loading

National Bank of Bahrain to Install ATM Remote Key Loading

Manama, Bahrain: Continuing its tradition of providing the highest level of security and convenience for their cardholders, National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has upgraded its installation of SWITCHWARE® 3.12 to begin a project for installing SWITCHWARE® Remote Key Loading functionality.

Unlocking Efficiencies with Remote Key Enabled ATMs

Saving time and cost, SWITCHWARE’s integrated Remote Key Loading (RKL) functions with RSA authentication includes support for both Diebold’s certificate-based protocol and NCR’s signature-based protocol. Key custodians no longer need to travel long distances to load keys into the ATM.

Saving Time, Ensuring Compliance, Better Resource Allocation

New keys can be remotely injected into ATMs without the need for a physical visit. Keys can be randomly regenerated using commands sent from SWITCHWARE, encrypted with the RSA key and then downloaded to the ATM. National Bank of Bahrain staff can now be used for more productive tasks and while both the bank and its customers benefit from increased security.

Remote Key Loading Benefits

  • Centralized initial key management
  • Dynamic key exchanging
  • Elimination of physical ATM key loading
  • Better utilization of staff and resources
  • No additional hardware required
  • Utilizes existing interface to the hardware security module (HSM)

Remote Key Loading Functions

  • ATM Remote key management
  • RSA authentication
  • Thales, Futurex and Safenet HSM support
  • NCR signature-based protocol support
  • Diebold certificate-based protocol support

While fraud mitigation measures have proven invaluable, past compliance with evolving key management protocols have been difficult and expensive to implement, involving a physical visit by a minimum of two key custodians to generate and deploy new ATM keys. Now, with CSFi’s Remote Key Loading, the costs of key generation, storage, and distribution processes are dramatically reduced.

First Citizens Bank to Implement SWITCHWARE® Remote ATM Key Loading

fcb_logoPort of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: First Citizens Bank will be implementing remote ATM key loading (with RSA authentication) for their network of NCR ATMs. Remote ATM key loading eliminates the need to visit each ATM when periodically loading new ATM cryptographic keys to conform with evolving security standards and compliance mandates. SWITCHWARE® interacts with the Thales HSM and uses RSA to centrally manage the periodic Terminal MasterKey (TMK) distribution to each ATM eliminating the need for multiple bank representatives to inject the TMK into the ATM.

RSA Remote Key Loading (RKL)

Integrated Remote Key Loading (RKL) functions with RSA authentication are incorporated into SWITCHWARE to include support for both Diebold’s Certificate Based Protocol and NCR’s Signature Based Protocol. This integrated solution utilizes existing interfaces to the ATM and Hardware Security Module (HSM) to perform authentication between the ATM and SWITCHWARE with no additional hardware components required. Keys can be periodically and randomly regenerated via commands with the HSM, encrypted with the RSA key and then downloaded to the ATM. Staff can now be used for more productive tasks and your financial institution will benefit from increased transaction security.

Reducing the Cost of Global Compliance

ATMs rely on network protection and encryption keys to keep customer data and ATM funds safe. To reduce the risks of key compromise, individual countries, major networks and card associations enforce strict guidelines for key management including assignment of unique and random master keys for each ATM. These encryption keys must be changed on a regular basis in order to meet compliance mandates and maintain security.

While these fraud mitigation measures have proven invaluable, past compliance with evolving key management protocols has been difficult and expensive to implement, involving a physical visit by a minimum of two key custodians to generate and deploy new ATM keys. Now, with CSFi’s Remote Key Loading, the costs of key generation, storage and distribution processes are dramatically reduced. Key custodians are no longer needed and costs associated with site visits are reduced. New keys are injected into ATMs without the need for a physical visit.

Remote Key Loading Benefits

  • Centralized initial key management
  • Dynamic key changing
  • Eliminates need to be present at ATM to change keys
  • Better utilization of staff resources
  • No additional hardware required
  • Utilizes existing interface to HSM

Remote Key Loading Functions

ENCASH to Implement CSFi’s EMV and ATM Remote Key Loading Solutions

encash_logoMakati, Philippines: Recently lauded as an “Innovator” by the National Center for Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Electronic Network Cash Tellers, Inc. (ENCASH) will be implementing new SWITCHWARE® and Thales EMV and ATM remote key loading functions for their ATM network.

ENCASH is the first independent ATM deployer in the Philippines and provides ATM services to rural banks, cooperatives and MFIs. Its products enable financial institutions to provide commercial bank-grade ATM services in more than 55 provinces across the country. Previously underbanked cardholders residing in rural areas benefit greatly from this service because ENCASH provides access to their finances via the ATM.

SWITCHWARE’s EMV support functions will provide ENCASH with an “end-to-end” EMV solution for both ATM acquiring and smart card issuance, enabling conformance to current and future EMV standards for payment processing of smart card transactions as well as pending liability shifts. The base SWITCHWARE EMV package will support EMV acquiring for all ENCASH NCR ANDC-driven ATMs plus a license for EMV transactions to be routed through the national MegaLink EFT network (when supported). Two new Thales payShield 9000 HSMs will be used for EMV and RKL/RSA cryptographic functions.

The Remote Key Loading (RKL) functions with RSA authentication incorporated into SWITCHWARE include support for NCR’s Signature Based Protocol and Diebold’s Certificate Based Protocol. This integrated solution utilizes existing interfaces to the ATM and Hardware Security Module (HSM) to perform authentication between the ATM and SWITCHWARE — with no additional hardware components required. Keys can be periodically and randomly regenerated via commands with the HSM, encrypted with the RSA key and then downloaded to the ATM. Eliminating the need for a technician to be present at the ATM to change keys, RKL allows staff resources to be allocated to more productive tasks while simultaneously providing FIs and cardholders with increased transactional security.
